Canon Pixma TR8620 Driver & Review– The Canon TR8620 Printer is a firm favorite on our list of the best all-in-one printers thanks to its many talents all rolled into one compact package.
This all-in-one printer is packed with office-ready features yet sized and easy to use at home. The entire printer is 17.3 x 13.8 x 7.5 inches and weighs just 17.4 lbs.
The screen is quite large at 4.3 inches and displays color with a responsive touchscreen for easy control. The Canon PIXMA TR8620 also features an ADF to automatically feed up to 20 pages at a time and there is also a duplexer for two-sided printing.
While it’s WiFi-connected, with 2.4GHz and 5GHz bandwidth, it also offers a Hi-Speed USB port, Ethernet port, SD card reader, and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity options. It’s even faxing capable thanks to the built-in 33.6kb modem.
The Canon PIXMA TR8620 comes with a faster-than-average printing speed when tested. In terms of glossy prints, it’s one of the fastest out there with a letter-sized photo completed in just two minutes and four seconds – leaving the four-minute and three-second average far behind.
So the speed is impressive but what about the print quality? Text is fine with clear edges, dark fonts and overall clarity. The color graphics are also decent with accurate colors and visible textures, with only slight streaking in the darker areas.
When it comes to glossy photos, even if they’re fast, they’re still high quality with sharp details, rich colors, and incredibly smooth transitions.
Copies are also great with text and graphics that closely reflect the original. That said, using ADF for copies does make the text look a bit larger than when using a flatbed.
While there’s an on-screen menu for copying, it doesn’t provide enough control over cutting, so you may find you’re using an app or computer connection for the greatest control here.
Two features that make this printer stand out as office class but still for home users are the inclusion of an ADF and duplexer. In the case of the ADF, this means you can load up to 20 sheets automatically at a time, making scanning and copying documents faster and easier. Duplexing means two-sided printing which can save paper and space in the documents you need to print.
There is also a 100-sheet cassette in the front and a 100-sheet feeder in the back, making it possible to prepare two different types of paper.
The inclusion of a free app is also helpful as it allows quick use of the printer via a smartphone, without the need to turn on the computer.
The LCD screen is very helpful and can be used to set other useful settings such as WiFi which is quick and easy if done using the WPS button option.
The ink is split into cartridges for cyan, magenta, and yellow with two black options namely a document-focused pigment-based black and a glossy photo specified dye-based black.
Price and Warranty
The Canon PIXMA TR8620 printer has an MSRP of $179.99, which is a fair price for the number of features it includes. It’s well-crafted and decently built, especially when you consider the large, colorful touchscreen interface and app support. What is not so affordable is the cost of operating the ink.
Even if you opt for Canon’s highest output ink tank, you’re still looking at 7 cents per page in monochrome or 12.3 cents in color. However, when you go to a four-by-six-inch snapshot it will make more sense at 25 cents. So overall the ink on this printer is expensive to replace.
So while this printer may seem affordable on the face of it, keep in mind that other brands charge more initially but less for the ink, so it may work out cheaper in the long run. It all depends on how much you are going to print.
Those who bought the Canon Pixma TR8620 from Amazon have given it an average rating of 4.4 stars out of five – very impressive at the time. While the negative focus on design issues like reloading the paper takes longer than it should, the positive focus is on third-party ink friendliness, high print quality, and easy WiFi setup.
Best Buy customers rate the printer with 4.2 stars out of five. Critical points include excessive ink usage and lower-than-expected print quality. Positive focus on sharp print quality and impressive duplex.
Should you buy it?
The Canon PIXMA TR8620 is a full-featured all-in-one printer that packs in many powerful features in a compact and user-friendly home form that is feature-rich enough for use in the office. While upfront costs are low and print quality and speed are decent, long-term ink costs can add up.
Backed by decent apps and plenty of connectivity options, this is the future-friendly printer. The addition of the ADF and duplexer makes it a great option for job printing while you still have high-quality glossy capabilities for photo printing too.
